14.  Charity

“Need a hand?”

Tara turned in the direction of the voice, squinting to make out the face of her boyfriend, Nick.  “I thought you worked today,” she said, a little suspicious.

“I changed shifts,” he said, his voice almost too innocent.

The cane had been held loosely at Tara’s side, but at Nick’s words, she shifted its position enough to point it at him.  “You’re lying to me.”

He sighed.  “I’m not.”

“You didn’t think I could get home.”

“Tara—”

“I don’t want your charity,” she snapped.  “I can do this alone.”

“No,” he said, uncharacteristically blunt.  “You can’t.”

Tara Foster and Nick Cartwright.  Original characters.
