20.  Dawn

“James,” Naomi began, and then stopped.

Her friend looked over at her, his features indistinguishable in the dim light.  “Yeah?”

“Do you think . . .?”  Naomi faltered, her gaze drifting to the window, where the first strands of sunlight were beginning to appear over the horizon. 

“Think . . .” James was having a hard time following her, either because of his own weariness or their circumstances. 

“Think that this is the last sunrise we’ll ever see?”  She blurted this all out at once.

James couldn’t look at her, wincing as he said, “I’d say that’s a definite possibility.”
