The umbrella shaded the couple lying along two towels. The woman was stretched on her stomach, while the man reclined against a cooler. “Tell me,” Paul said, lowering his magazine. “When’s the last time you went to the beach?”
Lauren lifted her head, gazed past the sand to where the blue expanse of water disappeared into the distance. “Too long,” she said. “I worked a lot and, well, we just never went to the beach.”
The unspoken words could’ve dampened spirits, had Paul chosen to let them. “When do you want to come back?” he asked.
