37 A strange sound

Anna looked up from her book.  “What’s that?”

Mike, head bent over his sketchpad, ignored her.

“Hey,” Anna snapped.  “I said, what’s that?”

“What’s what?” her brother sighed. 

“That noise.”

“You’re hearing things.”

“I’m not hearing things.  Can’t you hear something creaking?”

He rolled his eyes.  “I’m sure it’s a ghost.”

“Shut up.”

“An angry ghost,” Mike continued, sketching frantically.  “With fangs.”  He held up a drawing that had Anna rolling her eyes.

“You don’t hear it?” she persisted. 

“Hear—”  He was interrupted by a moan.

“What the—?”

Mike smirked.  “Tara.” 

Anna caught on.  “Forget I said anything.”
