47 A summer sport

“Why are we here again?” James wanted to know, as they walked through the doors of the training center.

“To swim laps, that’s why.”

“I know that, but—” He paused as Naomi stripped out of her clothes to reveal the bathing suit underneath, “I don’t see the point.”

“What?”

“Why not just swim?  Why does it have to be laps?”

“Because—”  Naomi began, then stopped.  “You know,” she said.  “You’re right.  Let’s just swim for a bit.  I’ll do a few laps when we’re done.”

James’s features rearranged themselves into a grin, “In that case,” he said, “cannonball!”

Naomi Williams and James Knox.  Original characters.
