79 Don’t Wake Me Up

I rolled onto my side, restless.  The coming of the new day brought nothing to anticipate, nothing except terror, and pain, and early death.  Beside me, Naomi slept on, one arm flung across my waist, hair a mess.  Though I’d always known that I wouldn’t live to grow old, the thought that she had been robbed of the opportunity also was almost more than I could stand.

Checking the clock, I bent down to shake her awake.  “Naomi.”

“Go away,” she mumbled.

“It’s time to wake up.”

“Don’t want to,” she muttered back.  “What’s the point?”

I had no answer.

James Knox and Naomi Williams.  Original characters.
