I’m an aspiring writer and a native Midwesterner. Though I grew up in the Chicago area, I’ve spent the last several years living in Iowa, in the same town where I attended college. I have a BA in English, plus creative writing and Spanish minors, because I apparently collect language degrees like they’re going out of style. 😉
I’m currently working on a couple different manuscripts in the hopes of seeing one of them published someday. When I’m not writing, I spend my time volunteering at a local animal shelter, compiling my list of future travel destinations, and reading far too many books at once.
I was born in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. My parents, younger sister, and I moved to my current hometown when I was three, and I’ve lived there ever since. When I was small, I used to tear apart the bookshelves in our kitchen, fill my arms with picture books, and pile them into my parents’ laps. I’m told that I memorized most of my favorites well before I could actually read them myself.
Once I did learn to read I devoured all the books I could get my hands on. In elementary school, I was the little girl who constantly got into trouble with her teachers for reading under her desk during class. For years I stuck mostly to animal stories and contemporary or historical fiction, though my interests have–thankfully–broadened since then.
Though I wrote a lot when I was young, I temporarily lost interest in story-telling after writing one too many essays for school. A trip to Mackinac Island, MI, rekindled my interest, although I lost the the initial draft of that story in the great computer crash of ’03. My mother has never forgiven me for not backing up a copy.
I started writing my first real novel when I was sixteen, and by then I was hooked. After optimistically sending that MS to one agent, I was forced to admit that it was never intended to see the light of day. Since then, I’ve finished enough other stories to know that I’m at my happiest in front of my computer, following my characters through whatever quagmires I’ve invented for them.
